Hyde Park Street Art Programs Transform Chicago Neighborhood's Visual Landscape

In May 2025 the Hyde Park Viaduct Galleries received a refresh that installed 19 new large-scale vinyl artworks by local artists on the 53rd and 55th Street viaducts. The project replaced earlier pieces that had been in place for nearly two decades.

Viaduct Galleries and Recent Installations

Visitors walking the 53rd and 55th Street viaducts can view the current set of vinyl works that form the refreshed Viaduct Galleries. These pieces sit on structures maintained through ongoing coordination with Special Service Area #61 and the Southeast Chicago Commission. The galleries serve as an accessible outdoor venue where the public encounters contemporary contributions from neighborhood artists.

Permanent Murals in Downtown Hyde Park

Two permanent murals were added in Downtown Hyde Park as part of the same initiative. Nico Berry created Harold’s Parakeets at 53rd Street while Izze Ortiz produced Essence of Growth at 55th Street. Both works resulted from partnerships between the artists, Special Service Area #61 and the Southeast Chicago Commission, giving visitors fixed reference points along the main commercial corridors.

Historic Murals and Preservation Efforts

Hyde Park also maintains earlier works through targeted restoration. Astrid Fuller’s 1977 mural Pioneer Social Work was repainted and revealed on November 19, 2024, during an event organized by the Hyde Park-Kenwood Community Conference. The Hyde Park Art Center displays the Children of the Wall mural, painted by Liz Lazdins, Miguel Aguilar, Rahmaan Barnes and Lavie Raven to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Wall of Respect. These sites allow visitors to trace successive layers of public art activity.

Community Partnerships and Earlier Projects

Programs run by the Chicago Public Art Group have contributed additional large-scale pieces. In 2022 the group collaborated with lululemon to unveil a 1,200-square-foot mural by Nikko Washington, celebrated on December 15, that honored the Hyde Park community. Such partnerships demonstrate how local organizations continue to commission and maintain public artworks at established venues.
