Chicago City Council Votes Next Week on Hyde Park Ward Remap

The Chicago City Council reached a tentative deal to remap aldermanic wards for the next 10 years, splitting Hyde Park from two wards into three: the 4th, 5th, and 20th Wards. The Council is set to vote on the new ward map's confirmation next week, with the proposal reportedly supported by 41 alderpersons.

Zoning and Development Decisions

City Council is scheduled to address repealing a Hyde Park zoning change for a development project at Hyde Park Square, or place the issue on the November ballot if developers and residents fail to compromise. Separately, a new mixed-use retail/residential development along South Harper Avenue and East Hyde Park Boulevard received unanimous approval from the Chicago Plan Commission on August 19 and now awaits the City Council Zoning Committee.

Community Meeting on Shelter

Alderman Desmon Yancy (5th Ward) recently hosted a virtual community meeting to address residents' concerns regarding a state-supported migrant shelter opened in East Hyde Park. These topics together point to several concrete actions the Council must resolve in the coming weeks.
