Hyde Park has emerged as the focal point for Chicago’s smart city strategy, functioning as the primary deployment site for the Array of Things (AoT). This urban sensing network consists of a series of nodes installed on local streetlamps throughout the neighborhood. Designed to monitor environmental factors including air quality, temperature, humidity, and motion, the system functions as a tool for collecting data on city conditions.
The Array of Things and Civic Innovation
The Array of Things project represents a collaborative effort between the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory. The initiative aims to leverage the university’s local presence and the neighborhood's urban environment to refine sensor performance. According to project documentation, the effort received a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation, which supports an expansion plan to deploy 500 nodes throughout Chicago. Hyde Park serves as the initial testbed where this infrastructure is developed before wider city application.
Beyond the sensing network, the neighborhood supports civic technology development through the Chicago Innovation Exchange (CIE), located at 146 E. 63rd St. This 27,000-square-foot facility serves as a hub for startups and fabrication, currently supporting 18 startups and providing resources for over 1,100 members. The CIE is positioned to drive local innovation by offering space and support for projects that utilize urban data.
Urban Density and Future Smart Initiatives
Hyde Park's high demographic density, recorded at 18,600 residents per square mile as of 2024, provides the necessary conditions for testing block-scale data collection. This environment allows researchers to measure pedestrian traffic and environmental variations in a concentrated setting. Data collected here contributes to broader city objectives, which include a Smart Streets Pilot program that utilizes camera technology for traffic enforcement. Additionally, city-wide plans include the replacement of 270,000 streetlights with automated LED systems intended to improve energy efficiency. Residents can expect these technological integrations to continue as the city modernizes its infrastructure, with the data collected in Hyde Park remaining central to how these systems are managed and deployed.
