Logan Square Parks Transform Into Dog-Friendly Fitness Community Hubs
Logan Square residents are turning local green spaces into daily spots for group workouts and dog play.
How we reported this
Palmer Square Park now draws 400 dog owners and runners each weekday morning after the Chicago Park District added fenced off-leash zones and outdoor fitness equipment last spring.
The change reflects a citywide push to keep parks active year-round following a 2025 survey that showed 62 percent of Logan Square households own at least one dog and want shared exercise options. Warmer July weather has accelerated the shift, with residents seeking outdoor routines that combine pet care and strength work instead of indoor gym memberships.
Two spots leading the way
At Palmer Square Park, bordered by Palmer Boulevard and Kedzie Avenue, trainers from the Logan Square Neighborhood Association run free circuit classes every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 a.m. Participants complete body-weight intervals while their dogs remain inside the new 1.2-acre fenced area installed in March 2026. A block east on the Bloomingdale Trail, known locally as the 606, the entrance at Milwaukee Avenue and Spaulding Street features water stations for both people and pets plus pull-up bars and resistance bands added by the Friends of the 606 group in April.
These two locations sit within a half-mile of each other, letting residents combine a 3-mile trail run with supervised play time before work.
Numbers and next steps
City data released June 15 shows dog-park visits across Chicago rose 38 percent from the same period in 2024, with Logan Square recording the second-highest increase after the West Loop. A monthly pass for the Palmer Square fitness equipment costs $25, while 606 trail classes remain free through Labor Day. Residents can check the Logan Square Neighborhood Association website for updated schedules or join the Saturday 8 a.m. group walk that starts at the Haas Park field house and loops onto the 606.
Anyone new to the routine should arrive with proof of current vaccinations for their dog and bring a reusable water bottle; the Palmer Square station opens at 6:30 a.m. daily.
