Group Exercise Classes River North: Summer 2024 Guide
Find affordable group fitness classes at River North City Council facilities. Summer sessions include yoga, boot camps, water aerobics, and circuit training through Labor Day.
How we reported this
River North City Council opened registration for its summer group exercise schedule on July 1 at three main facilities, with sessions now running daily through Labor Day.
Participation in structured classes has grown steadily here since the city added new evening slots last year, as residents balance work and family commitments with efforts to stay active without high gym fees. Council data shows demand peaks in warmer months when outdoor options compete with indoor programs.
Two sites handle the bulk of classes. The River North Recreation Hub at 450 Elm Street offers morning boot camps and evening yoga on its second-floor studio overlooking the Chicago River. The North Pier Fitness Center on Illinois Street runs water aerobics in its indoor pool and circuit training in the main gym, both open to drop-ins and members alike.
Prices range from $10 for a single 45-minute class to $45 for a monthly pass covering unlimited access at either location. City records indicate 1,200 residents enrolled in the first week of July, up from 950 the same period in 2025.
Class options and schedules
Monday through Friday mornings at the Elm Street hub include 7 a.m. spin sessions led by certified instructors, while the Illinois Street center holds 6 p.m. strength classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Both venues require online sign-up through the city portal at least 24 hours ahead, though same-day spots open if cancellations occur.
Residents can filter options by time, intensity and equipment needs on the portal. New participants receive a free orientation on their first visit, covering facility rules and basic safety protocols.
Next steps for enrollment
Anyone interested should visit the portal or stop by either center before July 20 to secure a spot in popular evening slots. The council also posts printed schedules at the River North branch library on Superior Street for those without internet access. Staff at both facilities answer questions in person during regular hours from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
