Wicker Park Hosts Five Charity Runs and Fitness Walks This July
Wicker Park residents have multiple group runs and walks lined up on neighborhood streets and trails this July.
How we reported this
Three organized fun runs and charity walks open registration this week for events set in Wicker Park during July and early August.
The schedule comes as Chicago Park District data shows a 22 percent rise in neighborhood fitness participation since last summer, with residents turning to nearby routes after indoor routines faded. Local organizers cite steady demand for low-cost group sessions that start and end within a few blocks of Division Street.
Routes through the neighborhood
The Wicker Park Run Club will host a 5K fun run on July 18 that starts at the fieldhouse on Damen Avenue and loops south along Milwaukee Avenue before returning via North Avenue. A separate charity walk on July 26 benefits a local food pantry and follows the eastern section of the 606 trail from the Bosworth Avenue entrance, covering two miles with water stops at Leavitt Street. Both events allow same-day sign-ups at the starting points.
Additional sessions include weekly Wednesday evening group walks led by the park district staff that meet at the corner of Evergreen Avenue and Hermitage Street, covering flat paths through the park and adjacent streets.
Registration details and turnout numbers
Entry fees range from $15 for the charity walk to $25 for the timed 5K, with proceeds after costs directed to the pantry and trail maintenance. Last year’s comparable July events drew 280 participants across three dates, according to Chicago Park District records. Organizers expect similar or higher numbers this month given online preregistration already at 150 for the 18 July run.
Participants can register through the Chicago Park District website or in person at the Wicker Park Fieldhouse during weekday hours. Anyone new to group exercise should check with a physician before joining longer distances, and all events supply basic first-aid support on site.
