Wicker Park Walking Trails Ranked by Distance and Difficulty
Routes through neighborhood parks and nearby paths give residents clear choices based on length and effort level.
How we reported this
Three trails inside and around Wicker Park now carry official distance and difficulty ratings from the Chicago Park District.
Summer foot traffic has climbed sharply since the district posted the new ratings on its website last month. Residents in the 60612 and 60622 zip codes have logged more than 12,000 trail entries through the district’s free app in the first week of July alone. The ratings arrived just as daytime temperatures settled into the low 80s, prompting more people to exercise outdoors before the afternoon heat builds.
The shortest option sits inside Wicker Park itself at 1425 N. Damen Avenue. The 1.2-mile loop around the central lawn and playgrounds is marked easy, with a flat crushed-stone surface and benches every quarter mile. A second route starts at the same park and follows the sidewalk south on Damen to Eckhart Park at 2301 W. Chicago Avenue before circling back, adding up to 2.8 miles with one gentle incline near the fieldhouse. Both paths fall under the Chicago Park District’s summer walking initiative that began June 1 and runs through Labor Day.
Moderate routes add distance
Walkers seeking more challenge can connect from Wicker Park to segments of the 606 trail via the entrance at Milwaukee Avenue and North Avenue. That stretch measures 3.4 miles round-trip with a moderate rating due to two short wooden ramps and occasional bike traffic. The district recorded an average of 2,400 daily users on that segment during the last week of June. No permits are required, though the app offers downloadable maps updated every Monday.
Practical steps before heading out
Trail surfaces remain in good condition after recent maintenance completed on June 28. Visitors can download the Chicago Park District app for real-time crowd counts or stop by the Wicker Park Fieldhouse office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for printed route cards. Those planning longer walks are advised to carry water and check the district website for any temporary closures before leaving home.
